PORTFOLIO: OTHER: Vashon Studio
Victoria Adams' Vashon Island Studio creates an elegant space for artistic work and exhibition with an economy of means. The new building combines with two existing structures, a woodworking shop and the artist's original small studio, to form a courtyard with the studio forming the long edge of the three-sided space. A teak pergola along two sides of the courtyard creates a transition between the inside and out. Paved with antique Chinese granite, the courtyard enjoys views of the adjacent orchard and garden, and the ravine beyond.
The cedar siding and roofs of the existing buildings were replaced to match the new studio and emphasize the unity of the composition. Teak barn doors on sliding tracks adorn the two main openings to help control light, and a spired cupola, used for natural ventilation, crowns the roof. Inside, exposed manufactured trusses create rhythm and detail in the ceiling while stained concrete floors and painted walls provide a calm backdrop for Adams' creative process.
