PORTFOLIO: OTHER: Island Cabins
These custom-designed cabins were factory constructed, transported by barge to the island, and assembled on site in order to reduce construction impack on the remote island. To minimize the evidence that the cabins were factory built, we designed hinged roof trusses that allowed the factory modules to be shipped in compliance with freeway transport regulations, and could be hinged open on site to create steeper roof pitches. The wrap-around porches engage the cabins with their site, and allow the building mass to be visually connected to the plane of the landscape. The higher roof pitch and the wrap-around porches corrected two fundamental visual failures of the typical, factory-built mobile homes.
